An infrared sauna uses infrared light to heat the body from the inside-out. Some studies suggest that infrared saunas are more effective than regular saunas for neuromuscular system recovery. Post-exercise infrared sessions have been shown to improve neuromuscular performance and muscle soreness after resistance exercise training. Increased vasodilation from saunas can help reduce swelling, limit inflammation and pain, and enhance muscle repair.
By lowering the body’s temperature and inducing vasoconstriction, ice baths have been shown to reduce inflammation, alleviate spasm and pain after muscle injury, and reduce muscle soreness and post-exercise damage after strenuous activity. Ice baths have also been found to reduce thermal strain and are effective in maintaining subsequent high-intensity performance
Red light therapy has been shown to enhance sports-related recovery, by improving sleep, aiding muscle damage recovery (DOMS) after high-intensity physical exercise, attenuating muscle soreness, muscle strength loss, and ROM (range of movement) impairments. Red light can be used both pre-workout to support stronger muscle performance and limit muscle damage and strain, and post-workout to speed the recovery process by accelerating muscle adaptation to exercise.
Vielight is a form of red light therapy used directly on the brain. With 14 clinical trials showing benefits for conditions ranging from Dementia to concussions, it is seen as a promising intervention for neurological recovery. Vielight can also be used to dampen brain fog and improve cognitive function.
PEMF uses pulsed electromagnetic frequencies to stimulate cellular energy. PEMF influences cellular processes, improves circulation and ATP production through modulating the electromagnetic environment of the body. PEMFs have several applications in sport-related injuries. PEMF may reduce tendonitis, decrease DOMS and enhance recovery times from soft tissue injuries.
Compression boots have been shown to reduce muscular fatigue, pain, soreness, muscle breakdown, DOMS, stiffness, exercise-induced swelling, and increase flexibility. Evidence suggests they have benefits when used both pre- workout for priming muscles, and post-workout for accelerated recovery.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) involves breathing up to 96% oxygen in a pressurised chamber. HBOT treatment can improve recovery times from exercise-induced fatigue and has also been found to reduce pain intensity and support early recovery of exercise-related muscular injury amongst those competing in high-intensity training. Anecdotal evidence from sports medicine suggests 3-10 sequential sessions for acute injury recovery
