“Progress over perfection”

When we begin the journey to improve our health and fitness we often strive to be faultless in everything we do. Our efforts at perfection are most commonly demonstrated by going to the gym every day and by training at maximum intensity when we are there.

We think being perfect is the way to achieve our goals. However, in the world we live in, things do not always go to plan. We might become ill? We might have other important commitments that result in missing a gym session? We might even enjoy a few too many beers of an evening, then ditch our plan and give up because of one isolated, perceived lack of discipline?

In striving to be perfect, we often forget the most important thing when we pursue a new goal. The changes we make to our lifestyle should be equally enjoyable and achievable.

With this in mind, it might be more productive to bin the notion of seeking perfection and strive for progression instead? When we take this approach, we can celebrate small, frequent successes (or “wins”) that are significant milestones on our journey.

Examples can include, the capacity to train for longer periods, the capacity to train with more intensity and the capacity to recover from training quicker. Or perhaps we simply notice our clothes are a better fit? Straightforward indicators like these provide clear evidence of our progression. Importantly, they also reinforce our motivation to succeed.

I’ve picked a couple of themes from this concept below to consider next time you are looking to implement a new training block or goal:

1. Consistency over intensity – Start with applying 100% intensity in three sessions over six weeks, for example you may wish to attend two strength classes and one engine class over our nine week programme. If you feel good and are consistently making these sessions, why not add in a fourth class to your plan?

2. Something over nothing – Only have 45 mins to train? Get in and move in either FLY40 or our trademark ENGINE class to get your work done!

3. Momentum over motivation – Look to stack your “wins” on top of each other. After an enjoyable class in the gym, hold on to that feeling. Use that momentum as motivation to push yourself forward into your next class at FLY.

In summary,
Implementing a new goal takes time! With our lives being busier than ever, try and cut yourself some slack and enjoy the process!
